Patagonian Steppe: Collon Cura

This outing is set to one of the most diverse IBAs in the region and possibly the whole of Patagonia. The valley of the Rio Collon Cura offers an ideal environment for observing birds typical of patagonian steppes and wetlands, such as Black-necked Swan, Lesser Rhea, Flamingos, a variety of ducks, Shrike-Tyrants, shorebirds, Eagles and more
This sector is located about 100 km from San Martin de los Andes to the east by the road 234 passing through the town of Junín de los Andes and then entering the steppe zone up to the valley of the Rio Collon Cura. They spend the morning to be back at noon to continue the activities of the Fair.
This trip does not require physical demands.
Cost (Transfer + breakfast + lunch): U$S 35.-
Patagonian Forests: Yuco, Lanin National Park

The beautiful Forests in the area of Yuco.
This site is a typical forested area located within the Lanin National Park, 25 km from the center of San Martin de los Andes, formed by dense forests of Ñire, Pellín, Coihues and Lengas between Nothofagus, and Maitenes radales and varieties of ferns and flowers like Amancay and Mutisias.
For this outing the proposal is birding through the forest trail that runs for about 2.5 km where it reaches the lakes Corinas, throughout the circuit will have the opportunity to find species that are housed there, as the Magellanic Woodpecker, Chucao and Huet-huet Tapaculos, Austral Pigeon, Firecrowns among others.
The difficulty of this trip is low but requires a minimum physical training, then walk for about 4-5 hours.
High Steppes in Chapelco

High Steppes in Chapelco Hill
In this outing we have the possibility to visit a region on the high steppes of the Cordillera of the Andes, distributed from northern continent to the southern tip of the Andes Mountains, representing the altitudinal limit of vegetation. The plant formations form a sort of conglomerate wooded islands beyond, sometimes reaching to the bare rock, which only last a few lichens. Steppe dominated by grasses, Poa and Festuca, accompanied by special bushes. Among the herbs are various species of Viola and Senecio, and a lot flowers in late spring provide a beautiful landscape.
Bird species typical of this area are: Yellow-bridled Finch, Andean Hillstar, White-throated Hawk, Plumbeous Sierra-Finch, Black-billled shrike-Tyrant, Grey-flanked Cinclodes, several Ground-Tyrants and Miners.
This trip is low difficulty, but it takes a minimum of physical training
Volcan's Birds

In June 2011 the volcano Puyehue erupted in Chile, less than 150 km from San Martin de los Andes.
At the border to Chile known as "Paso Puyehue," fell about 50 cm of ash covering in forest and creating a situation rarely seen. The Patagonian Andean-forest birds surprised us with their strategies and demonstrated their ecological fitness for this crisis, which is the result of coevolution with the volcanoes that dominate the landscape. We have included this year a visit for the day to the area affected by the ash to witness this unique event of nature.
